The San Diego River Discovery at Grant Park is an exciting new project of the San Diego River Park Foundation. Situated on 17 acres of river-fronting property in one of San Diego’s most urban communities, Mission Valley, the project will provide a community park and activity center. The center is being designed as Southern California’s premiere river education facility. It will be a regional gathering place with a neighborhood feel – a place designed for people but always with the region’s namesake river in mind.
A central feature of the park is a planned 7000 square foot facility with interactive educational displays, multi-functional event space, retail and visitor information desk and much more. Education programming will feature exhibits about the River’s ecosystem, state-of-the-art interactive displays, and docent-led nature learning. The facility will be part of a larger eco-park which combines the latest environmental design with opportunities to discover the river and community park space. Educational experiences will be throughout the Park with a special emphasis on children. The Park will be a field station for the planned Mission Valley Charter School (K-8) and other local schools. Outdoor classrooms and even an amphitheatre will be incorporated into the design. The design of the Park will be to encourage discovery of the River by creating unique experiences.
The site for this project is a 17 acre property in the heart of Mission Valley bordered by Qualcomm Way and Camino del Rio N with the San Diego River running through it. It is the last major undeveloped property in Mission Valley. What was once a sand mining site will be transformed into the standard for future projects along the river in Mission Valley and throughout the planned 52 mile long San Diego River Park.
This project is being made possible by the extraordinary generosity of the Grant Family who is donating this property to the San Diego River Park Foundation. The property is being donated specifically to implement this vision, a vision shared by the Grant Family and the San Diego River Park Foundation. And what a vision it is!
This shared vision of a people place which celebrates the San Diego River and engages the community in the River’s future promises to be a treasured resource for all San Diegans.
Additional information about the project will be posted as the project advances.
