EL CAP (El Cajon Mountain) is an icon of the San Diego River

El Cajon Mountain

Did you know that parts of El Cap are privately owned?

Join us as we work with landowners to permanently conserve this icon for generations
to enjoy and for the golden eagles and other wildlife that call it home

Current Opportunity:
20 acres adjacent to the West Face!

This amazing property is part of the incredible face of El Cap overlooking El Monte Valley and the San Diego River.

May 8th: $20,993 To raise to complete this acquisition!
You can be part of helping to SAVE EL CAP!

We have until June 15th to raise the funds.

Project Information:
There are 4 privately owned properties remaining in our El Cajon Mountain Conservation Area. All of them are on the Mountain's face overlooking El Monte Valley and the River.

We have reached an agreement with one of the owners to acquire a 20 acre property. It is is an once in a lifetime opportunity to conserve this property so it will be forever held for the public and wildlife.

$4000 was needed by April 1st to place this property into escrow and secure the right to purchase it. Thanks to the response of supporters of El Cap, we met this challenge.

Since then we worked with the owner to place the property into escrow to secure our right to purchase it! We have done that and now we invite you to join us to raise the remaining funds needed to complete the acquisition!

Won't you join us by making a donation today?

This property is adjacent to our new West Face Preserve.
At 157 acres, it is a significant part of the face of the beloved El Cajon Mountain (commonly known as El Cap or El Capitan). It is also near a 385 property that we recently helped to conserve and are working now to own and manage in the future.

There are many reasons to conserve this area. Here are a few:

  • Foraging & nesting area for Golden Eagles
  • Popular hiking and climbing areas
  • Treasured view for many
  • Part of the San Diego River ecosystem

RECENT SUCCESS: 157 Acre Property acquired by the River Park Foundation

Thanks to more than 180 donors, the goal of raising $19,500 was met! The first $5000 was used for a deposit to place the property in escrow on March 27, 2012. The balance of the funds were used for closing costs and associated expenses.

The County of San Diego joined in and awarded $200,000 toward the acquisition. The individual donations were critical to securing the opportunity to purchase the property and pay for many of the costs.

Our thanks to the County Board of Supervisors, Parks and Recreation Department and General Services. A special thanks to Director Brian Albright and his staff at Parks & Rec for working with us on this project and to the property owner for their patience and extra efforts to make it all possible.

Thanks to all involved this property, which we call "West Face," is now permanently conserved!

Our tremendous thanks to the Heller Foundation of San Diego who made a grant to support this program and the work needed to identify interested landowners who are interested in selling their land and cost of negotiating and performing due dillegence on these acquisitions. Thank you!
