Mission Valley Greenway Initiative
San Diego River Park Foundation in partnership with the San Diego River Coalition, the San Diego River Conservancy, City of San Diego and the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition are working to create the San Diego River Trail between Fashion Valley Road and Qualcomm Stadium.

The Initiative calls for completing the "missing links" in this portion of the River Trail, much of which already exists. The missing links include under SR 163, under and east of SR 805, and between Fenton Marketplace and Qualcomm Stadium.
This project is related to the successful effort to complete the River Trail from Dog Beach to Sefton Park and Mission Valley which was completed in 2008. The San Diego River Trail is a planned trail from the mountains to the Ocean at Dog Beach. While called a "trail," the surface will change based upon the community's needs and use. In Mission Valley to the Ocean the trail will be an all-weather hard surface such as permeable concrete.
The Initiative also calls for increasing the experience of River Trail users through informational signs, benches and other amenities. An important element of this is to increase safety for trail users.
The third component of the Initiative is to pursue recommendations of a study being done by the City of San Diego to create safe crossings at the places where the River Trail crosses roads. Our first priority here is to have crossing lights at Camino del Este. While the primary River Trail is on the north side of the River along this strech, there is also a trail on the south side. One of the priority projects is to advance construction of a bridge over Qualcomm Way to connect this trail to the planned Discovery Center at Grant Park.
This is a very exciting initiative that will create connections for people of Mission Valley and others who are looking for the experience of riding a bike, walking or rolling along the River.
Your Input is Needed
What would you like to see included in the initiative?
Would you like to become a Trail Advocate?
You can help get these sections of the River Trail completed! Trail Advocates get updates about projects and then contact their elected officials to let them know you support the project. Trail Advocates may also attend public hearings or meetings. If you want to get even more involved, you can participate on a committee to help advance these projects. With the more advocates, the faster these projects will get completed!
Current Projects:
Under SR 163 - This City of San Diego project will complete the missing section between Avenida Del Rio and the existing trail on the east side of 163. When completed, the Trail will exist between Fashion Valley Road and 805 - more than 2.2 miles!
