SAVE MILDRED FALLS

Success! Mildred Falls Property Acquired
More than $300,000 Raised to Buy Iconic Natural Wonder

Mildred Falls is a towering natural wonder formed when Ritchie Creek dramatically falls more than 300 feet. When the property with the waterfall recently went up for sale, we knew we needed to act fast. We had a once in a lifetime opportunity to save the falls and work to conserve Ritchie Creek. More than 250 people came together to raise the funds needed and The San Diego River Park Foundation has now bought the property.

Our work will now focus on privately owned properties upstream if sold or developed are a threat to the waterfall and the wildlife that lives in the area. But we have a lot to celebrate. Donors to Mildred Falls will be invited to a special Nov. 15th celebration.

We need to be ready if another property comes on the market.

So we are working to build our Acquisition Fund for the next effort. Learn More

Details

The 58 acre property is located along Eagle Peak Road. As shown in the photo, this is where Ritchie Creek dramatically cascades down to the San Diego River - more than 1000 feet below - to create the stunning 300+ foot Mildred Falls.

The San Diego River Park Foundation has worked for 2 decades to conserve several privately owned properties in this area that are surrounded by the Cleveland National Forest. This property has been under our watch throughout this time. Just recently, we learned the owner passed away, and now the property is being sold. The real estate listing proposed suggested uses included a vineyard and a large house! Imagine this incredible natural treasure behind a fence, water diverted, and irreplaceable natural landscapes destroyed!

This 58 acre property is pristine! It is in wonderful condition and home to a variety of wildlife. There is even a golden eagle nest! Other species likely present include southwestern pond turtles, arroyo toads and larger mammals such as cougars and deer. SDRPF owns preserved land on two sides and the Cleveland National Forest is on another. But this is at risk if the property is sold.

People have come together to do something about it! More than 250 people donated enough funds so The San Diego River Park Foundation could move forward with the purchase.  Thank you to all who have donated! Thanks to you this private property which was at risk of being developed will now be conserved open space held in public trust. Now that the purchase is complete, we will work to establish a safe viewing area and limited trails so people can learn about the falls and this important open space.

Our first priority is to cover all expenses for this acquisition. If there are additional funds, they are held for a future land acquisition.

Yes, we have set Nov. 15 as a date for a celebration at Eagle Peak Ranch. All donors will receive an invitation with details.

Is SDRPF a private foundation?
No, we are a 501c3 public benefit, that means we are a qualified charity, and your gift is tax deductible as allowed by law.

I need a little time to get you a donation, is that okay?
Yes! Just let us know the amount and about how long it will take. We have some funds on reserve for just this reason. Thank you!
