Combating river trash through data collection!

The River Assessment Field Team is an important tool for solving the issue of trash in the San Diego River habitats. We find that trash comes from many sources and occurs on land under a variety of ownership and access (such as private property, public parks, ecological reserves, and more). Because of this, the RAFT team collects data about trash that includes the specific location, estimated volume, type of trash and other metadata that allow us to be strategic in planning clean-ups and advocating for solutions. Current data is available on our online portal

Data-informed action

Our data allows us to know whether we need a 40-yard dumpster or pickup truck for trash disposal, or to know if we need waders, shovels, or other tools to remove trash so we always have the right tools for the job. It allows us to know the landowners with whom we need to coordinate. It allows us to know if we can engage kids and families, or if we need more experienced volunteers. Our data-informed model also allows us to be a partner in addressing issues that impact the health of the San Diego River, such as homelessness. Volunteer with RAFT!

RAFT volunteers not only contribute significantly to efforts towards a trash-free river, they get the chance to explore some of the most beautiful and off the beaten path parts of the lower San Diego River. There are lots of ways to get involved:

  • Every Tuesday and Friday morning, RAFT volunteers survey the river. Volunteers are welcome to join regularly or intermittently based on their availability.
  • The RAFT team also leads our efforts to conduct 3 annual census events to count the number of people experiencing homelessness in the riverbed.
  • Each October, we survey the entire riverbed in two weeks, so that we have a comprehensive snapshot to compare annual trash trends over time
