Special Removal Needed
Tackling Difficult to Remove Trash
Thanks to an generous grant provided by the Cushman Family Foundation, we have funding to remove all of these items from our map over the next several years.
For many years, we have diligently recorded trash in the riverbed as "Special Removal Needed." This may be trash that is submerged in the river, partially buried, extremely heavy, or in need of dismantling before it can be removed. Some of these require special tools, like a winch, shovel or digging bar, Sawzall, or waders. Because of these challenges this trash has so far been mostly on the backburner as we implement our clean-up priorities, and some of it has been out there for years!
Our River Rescue Special Removal Team was formed in 2026 to tackle hard to reach trash and get it out of the river... for good.
Thanks to an generous grant provided by the Cushman Foundation and the Page Family Foundation, we have funding to start this new team and purchase the tools needed to remove all of these items from our map over the next several years.
Volunteers Needed! Will You Join Us?
If you are someone that likes to think out-of-the-box and come up with creative solutions for unique problems, this is the team for you! This team primarily meets on Thursday mornings along the riverbed in Mission Valley, but occasionally will meet on Saturday's to ensure this work gets completed.
We're looking for some long-term volunteers that are interested in participating in these especially uncommon trash clean-up experiences!
Click here to read more about this effort and see upcoming work parties on our volunteer calendar, or email Rachel, our Program Manager, to learn more about joining this team.
