Badger Den Acquisition is in Reach!
Join the effort to protect a key wildlife area

$1380 in donation needed to buy this important property!
Historic home to badgers, located at the South Rim of the Upper San Diego River Gorge.

It is all part of the effort to acquire properties which are currently undeveloped and privately owned within this key ecological area.

The property is part of a key wildlife corridor with many privately owned properties. It is near Pine Hills on the SE side of the incredible Upper San Diego River Gorge.
Yes, badgers have been seen here (and many other critters).

This property was scheduled to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. As a nonprofit conserving it for open space, we secured the right to purchase this property. Now we just have to raise the remaining funds to buy it, and conserve it forever! What a great way to celebrate Earth Day.

Donations of any amount are appreciated!

DETAILS:

Why is this important"
  • Wildlife movement area for large mammals (cougar, badgers, deer, etc.)
  • Habitat for bobcats, gray foxes and other species
  • Helps conserve Engelmann Oak Woodlands - one of the most endangered plant communities in Calfornia
  • Protects native grasslands and other important plant communities
  • Scenic integrity - if developed this would impact a pristine open space area

    Purchase History:

Some time ago we learned that this privately owned property was going to be auctioned off by the County of San Diego. The owner had walked away and not paid their property taxes for many years. We contacted the County and have been working with them. On April 16th, they informed us that we could purchase the property. All we needed to do was raise the remaining $1380 needed. We must act fast.

We decided to call this acquisition "Badger Den" because we have documented American badger dens in this area. We have partnered with the USGS on badger research and identified this as a key conservation area for this important species.

We invite you to join us in being part of this effort. Whether you can donate $10, $20 or more, together we can raise the remaining funds and complete this purchase.

Not only have badgers lived in the area but we have also documented bobcat families, cougars and many other species.

The map shows the strategic importance of these the property. If developed, it could have a significant impact on other conserved lands. Its conservation strengthens the bridge between National Forest lands (green). The lands without a color overlay remain privately owned. We will continue to work to acquire any of these properties if the owners decide to sell them.
